The Civil Rights Council (CRC) Okpanam Unit continues to actively engage in advocacy and intervention efforts within the community, addressing diverse legal and human rights challenges. With a commitment to justice and empowerment, the unit remains dedicated to upholding civil liberties and promoting societal welfare. To mark its monthly meeting, The CRC Okpanam Unit convened on June 2, 2024, at Baakgene Plaza, Asaba. During the gathering, the unit coordinator Chima Victor Ngozi outlined the unit’s growth and the increasing number of case files which were pending human rights intervention. Issues of eviction notices, domestic violence by a local monarch, child adoption issues, and tenant disputes were the major cases buttressed on as they needed immediate intervention. The coordinator suggested key resolutions which included; drafting a statement to address human rights abuses by the local monarch and planning a public workshop on human rights pending national approval. This was welcomed unanimously by other members who were present during the meeting.
The Okpanam Unit of Civil Rights Council has not relented in its effort to abate human rights abuses and have always shown these through interventions. The members who were present also affirmed their commitment to work tirelessly to ensure that the society and government pay attention to human rights abuses which is a major challenge in Delta state. The unit was also privileged to welcome a new member who identified himself as Comrade Nnamdi Joseph.
Ending with a vote of thanks and prayer, Comrade Patrick Oliko still urge members to continue in human rights advocacy as it is the right of law-abiding citizens and it is a good course.
